Lighting The Barbecue
BeefEater barbecues are easy to start and easy to control. But
like anything to do with gas, you must exercise due caution.
This section details the two ignition systems available, as well
as the good ol' fashioned manual method. |
 |
- Check that all the control knobs are in the off position. You will notice that when they are in this position, they are locked for safety and can only be turned by first pushing the knob inwards.
- If you have a roasting hood, open it fully, or completely remove it from the barbecue. Do not under any circumstances light the BBQ with the hood closed or the flat metal lid or Polyester cover in place.
- Turn on the gas, either at the cylinder (LPG), or the shut-off valve if you are on main (natural gas) supply.
- Depending upon the model you have purchased, your BeefEater barbecue comes with either a 'Quartz Start' -
independent ignition system or a 'Quartz start' - Cross-light ignition system. Both are very reliable and good for thousands of starts.
Quartz Start Independent Ignition - ignition is automatically activated for each burner when the knob is turned. To light, simply press and turn the far left-hand control knob slowly in an anti-clockwise manner to the "High" position, where an audible click will be heard and ignition will automatically take place. It is important to turn the knob SLOWLY so that sufficient time is allowed for the gas to travel to the burner before ignition takes place.
Quartz Start Cross-light Ignition - ignition is automatically activated for the main ignition burner only, all other burners are lit successively from right to left. To light, simply press and turn the far right -hand control knob slowly in an anti-clockwise manner to the "High" position, where an audible click will be heard and ignition will automatically take place. It is important to turn the knob SLOWLY so that sufficient time is allowed for the gas to travel to the burner before ignition takes place. Then light each successive burner from right to left by turning the control knob to 'high' for each burner.
Manual Lighting - Occasionally it may be necessary for you to light your BeefEater manually. This can be safely and easily achieved by turning the left hand control knob anti-clockwise to the "High" position. Then light the left hand burner immediately through the gap between the front of the drip tray and the BBQ body.
If the burner doesn't light immediately - If after three attempts the burner fails to light, turn off the gas at the cylinder or mains and wait 5 minutes before repeating the procedure. This precaution is taken to avoid a gas build up in the barbecue which could ignite when the BBQ lights.
Lighting all other burners after the far left burner is alight
- Once you have a flame on the left-hand burner, you can easily light the one next to it by turning its control knob to the "High" position and allowing the flame to automatically" cross- light". This "cross-lighting" can be repeated from burner to burner until each of the burners are alight.
If any burner fails to light due to a blockage at the main opening of any burner, remove each burner and clean thoroughly before re-lighting.

Controlling The Flame
The advantage of gas is that you can control the heat input of
your barbecue instantly. |
 |
Flame size can be increased or reduced to any part of the
cooking surface by turning the control knob of the corresponding
burner in an anti-clockwise manner to reduce the flame (to low)
- or in a clockwise manner to increase the flame size (to high).
Note: When the burner is on "Low" setting, it operates at half
the output of "High". It is worth keeping in mind that 2 burners
on "High" is equivalent to 4 burners on "Low". |
Lighting And Controlling The Side Burner
Side burners are a great investment in versatility. Lighting is
easy, but different from your main barbecue burners. |
 |
- Check that the control knob is in the "off" position and ensure that the gas is properly connected.
- Raise the lid of the side burner and check that the burner and burner cap are in the correct position.
- Press and turn the control knob SLOWLY (3- 4 seconds) in an anti- clockwise manner to the "high" position until a click is heard and the burner ignites.
- If the burner fails to ignite, turn the knob to the "off" position and repeat the process.
- A low flame or simmer condition is obtained by turning the control knob further in an anti- clockwise position to low.
- After use, turn the control knob and gas cylinder valve off, clean off any food spills and close lid.
- Do not disconnect any gas fittings whilst the side burner is operating.
Unlike the gas burners within the BBQ, the side burner is exposed to the elements. As such, we suggest that you do not use the side burner in windy conditions. |
