BBQ Care and Maintenance

The Cast Iron Cooking Surfaces

The more the cast iron cooking surfaces are used and seasoned correctly, the easier they will be to maintain and the less likely to rust.
It is preferable not to clean your cast iron cooking surface after use. Allow the cooking residues to remain on the surface until you next use the BBQ. This will serve to seal and protect the cooking area from rust.

Pre-heat your BeefEater for 10 minutes before you cook. Then allow to cool off and remove any charred remains from previous cooking in the following manner:

Porcelain coated cast iron: If your BeefEater features porcelain coated cast iron cooking surfaces, then ONLY use a Brass Bristle Brush to remove the residue and clean the surface. Brushes specifically designed to be used for this purpose can be purchased from your authorized BeefEater retailer

Non Porcelain coated cast iron: If your BeefEater features non-porcelain coated cast iron cooking surfaces, then clean the surface with a brush, scrubber, or scraper. Brushes and scrapers specifically designed to be used for this purpose can be purchased from your authorized BeefEater retailer

Once this is done, lightly coat the cooking surfaces with cooking oil before you commence actual cooking.

If it is your preference to clean the cooking surfaces after each barbecue, then be sure to liberally coat all of the cooking surfaces with cooking oil before covering the barbecue and storing it away.

The Burners

Keeping the inlet and the burner holes free of both food residue and insect nests are the main concerns here.
Insect nests and spider webs: Check the main opening, throat and venturi to each burner regularly for insect nests (ie wasps, ants or spiders). Nests and webs are capable of being spun overnight - these can be dangerous and must be cleaned thoroughly.

Clean away webs with a bottle brush inserted into the burner. Never use pesticides to eliminate insects as these chemicals could be dangerous to your health.

Food residues: Remove the burners periodically and scrub clean with soapy water and a wire brush, making sure that the ports are free of any obstruction. Then replace the burners back into their correct positions and dry by lighting each burner. This drying procedure will help to minimize rusting or corrosion.

The Body

Although Stainless Steel and Vitreous Enamel (Porcelain) have a lustrous finish and are very durable under adverse conditions, they still need regular cleaning.
General

The frequency of cleaning of your BeefEater will vary according to the desired appearance and environment. As a guide, if your BBQ is positioned in an ocean or marine environment, it will require more cleaning.

Wash stainless steel and vitreous enamel with warm soapy water or detergent, using a clean cloth and if necessary a soft bristle brush. Only ever use this method on the fascia, as harsh cleaners could damage the fascia graphics.

After washing, rinse well with clean water and wipe dry.

To remove light grease or salt spray, use soap, liquid, or powder detergents with warm water.

Heavy Grease

Vitreous Enamel: To remove heavy grease from vitreous enamel, use concentrated detergent, or domestic cleaning powders.

Stainless Steel: To remove heavy grease from stainless steel, use a recommended stainless steel cleaner.

Care should be taken with all cleaning agents to avoid damage to any associated non-stainless steel components within the BBQ. We strongly suggest that you carefully read and follow the directions supplied with any cleaning agent. Likewise, any fire, safety and protective clothing regulations featured, should also be closely adhered to.

In the case of stainless steel, cleaning in one direction only, along the original polish lines, produces best results.

Bronzing of Stainless Steel

It's worth noting that "bronzing" often occurs when stainless steel gets hot. This slight bronze, or yellow chromium oxide tint will not affect the stainless steel or the performance of the barbecue. Consequently it is not covered under the BeefEater Product Warranty.

There are a number of cleaners on the market that have been specifically designed for cleaning stainless steel and some of them will remove "bronzing". If this is of concern to you, we suggest that you talk with your local BeefEater retailer who will be able to advise on the use of various recommended cleaners that are available in your local market.

The Roasting Hood

Most procedures are covered under the previous section, although a few specific items are detailed here.
All models of roasting hoods should be completely washed on a regular basis to avoid any grease or dirt build up. Remove non-washable grease, or food build-ups with an approved cleaning agent.

To ensure that your roasting hood maintains its original condition, keep your barbecue covered with a special BeefEater Polyester PVC cover when not in use.

Glass Window: If your model features a glass window, this should be kept clean to maintain vision into the hood whilst cooking.

Stainless Steel: Fingerprints constitute the major item here. It is very important to clean the stainless steel roasting hood to remove all fingerprints before lighting and operating. If not, the fingerprints will discolor the steel when the hood heats up.

The Side Burner

To maintain your side burner, it is best to clean after each use. Most procedures are covered under the previous two sections, although a few specific items are detailed here.
On a periodical basis, dismantle the burner and scrub clean with warm soapy water, making sure that the burner ports are free of obstruction.

Replace the burner in the correct position and dry by lighting the burner. This in turn will help to avoid corrosion.

Major spills and overflows should be cleaned a soon as possible after they occur to prevent them from being baked on to the spill bowl and inside surfaces of the side burner.

Trolleys

The most important piece of advice is to keep your barbecue covered with the BeefEater full length, Polyester PVC cover when not in use. These notes detail specific things you can do to remove marks when they do occur.

Metal/Stainless Steel Trolleys:

Wash with warm soapy water or detergent using a clean cloth and if necessary a soft bristle brush. After washing, rinse with clean water and wipe dry.

In the case of stainless steel, cleaning in one direction only along the original polish lines produces best results.

Do not under any circumstances use steel wool, metallic scrapers, harsh abrasives or high bleaches.

To remove light grease or salt spray, use soap, liquid, or powder detergents with warm water.

To remove heavy grease from the "Designer cart", use concentrated detergent or domestic cleaning powders.

To remove heavy grease from the stainless steel cart, use a recommended stainless steel cleaner.

Care should be taken with all cleaning agents to avoid damage to any associated non-stainless steel components. We strongly suggest that you carefully read and follow the directions supplied with any cleaning agent. Likewise, any fire, safety and protective clothing regulations featured, should be also closely adhered to.
